Soul Music Review

Hey Lovelies,

Guess what day it iss………….Its Humpday, or Wednesday if you want to be more formal. It’s also soul music review day! Today I decided to feature a song that is a personal favorite of mine. Not to mention, it is sung by an artist that is a personal favorite of both my mother and myself.

The song featured today is “He Loves Me (Lyzel in E Flat)”, sung by the incomparable Jill Scott. The song was produced Keith Pelzer, Jill Scott, and Fat Back Taffy and written by Keith Pelzer and Jill Scott. Here is a link to the song is below…

Jill Scott is most definitely a pioneer in neo-soul music. Her unique and soulful vocals are always a pleasure to hear and experience. Scott’s lyrics are enticingly poetic and very charismatic. She appeals so directly to her core and loyal fan base, never feeling the need to adjust her sound to fit in with mainstream or pop culture. She is a force of both strength and inspiration to so many women across the world. “He Loves Me” charted on the Billboard Hip-Hop/R&B charts was nominated for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance at the 2003 Grammy Awards.

The foundation of most of Ms. Scott’s music is love. It is truly felt in essence and her passion exudes on the track. “He Loves Me” illustrates a woman that is fully enamored by her man. And just as importantly, she is sure of his love for her. In the record, she consistently speaks of a man that is delightfully “different” than anything she has experienced before. In theory, when you have been wronged or mistreated in past relationships, you are more inclined to appreciate a good man or woman when they are presented to you. There is a sense of pride and ease in knowing your significant other has your whole heart, and you have theirs.

In my relationships both spiritual and otherwise, it is important that I feel just as strongly for my partner as they do for me. Equally reciprocated love can be a rare gem to find in the game of love, dating, and even friendship. Once it is found, it is a feat that should not be easily disregarded or dismissed. I appreciate Ms. Jill Scott for showing such transparency and honesty in her music. She is an artist that truly deserves to be honored and celebrated.

Prayers for Manchester

On Tuesdays, I usually like to post a funny dating disaster story, however, I do not feel comfortable joking less than 24 hours after such a heinous act of evil violence took place last night in Manchester. On the evening of Monday, May 22, 2017, it is being reported that “An explosion that appeared to be a suicide bombing killed at least 22 people and wounded 59 others at an Ariana Grande concert filled with adoring adolescent fans, in what the police were treating as a terrorist attack.”

I cannot even fathom experiencing something like this. I frequent many concerts myself, and before now, I have never had the fear of potentially losing my life while attending. Concerts are a place to have fun and escape the realities of life for a couple hours.  They are a place to show praise and respect to an artist that you love and admire deeply with others that feel the same. Ariana Grande shows cater to a younger audience, most of which being under the age of 25. The person or persons responsible for the bombing specifically targeted children who had their whole lives ahead of them. I can’t imagine being a parent in this time. To think that you can drop off your child at a concert and never see them again is simply unfathomable.

Nicola McGraw Murray, who was at the concert with her 12-year-old daughter Olivia told NBC News that “Within seconds as you can imagine it was chaos and people were panicking and running to try and get out the door … We were getting swept with the people crushing to get out and I was terrified my daughter would get crushed. At one point, she was getting dragged away from me but I managed to pull her into me and force her in front of me while trying to direct her to the door and down the steps.”

These now frequent and senseless acts of violence and terrorism, both domestic and international, begin to make for a very pessimistic world. It causes people to feel as though you cannot go anywhere without being targeted. To think that you are not safe in any place is extremely taxing on a person mentally.

I do not want to live my life out of fear. Although the fear is very real, I try not let it dictate my reality. Yet and still, the realities of danger are also very real. Moving forward, I will attempt to be very vigilant of my surroundings, especially when attending events with large crowds. If a threat is presented in advance, I will reconsider attending. Unfortunately, so many of these terrible acts happen without caution or warning, therefore there is no guarantee of security. In this time, I truly have to put all of my trust and faith in God.

I pray for the family, friends, and loved ones of those who lost their lives. I also pray for all individuals injured and those who had to witness and experience such panic and fear. I pray for Ariana’s peace of mind, as I hope she does not blame herself in any way for this tragedy. All in all, I pray for this world and I pray for peace.

Spirituality and Religion

Religion and spirituality are often scrutinized and misunderstood as not being synonymous. In my opinion, the belief that a religious person cannot be spiritual or vice versa is simply a falsehood. conducted a study of the 12 most popular world religions and the findings were as listed below:

The 12 Most Popular World Religions and Sects

  1. Christianity 2.04 B
  2. Islam 1.226 B
  3. Catholicism 1.142 B
  4. Hinduism 828 M
  5. Agnosticism 638 M
  6. Buddhism 367 M
  7. Atheism 150 M
  8. Anglicanism 85.4 M
  9. Sikhism 23.8
  10. Seventh Day Adventist 16 M
  11. Mormonism 15 M
  12. Judaism 14.5 M

Before I entered into a relationship, one of the most commonly asked questions I received was, “what religion are you?” Very quickly I began to realize that if I did not directly classify myself as one of the religions listed above, then most men simply could not understand my faith. I find it odd and almost irksome how society constantly feels the need to categorize everything, or box it in to fit their understanding. For me, spirituality is complex and not a cookie cutter resolve. As a spiritual woman, there are still aspects to numerous religions that I identify with, and also aspects that I do not.

Some individuals feel as though if you do not identify with a single organized religion, then there is a sense of atheism in you. When in actuality, this could not be farther from the truth. I refuse to be categorized or coerced by anyone. I choose to listen to my heart and my own sense of reason. More importantly, I listen to God whenever I am in search of answers. To me, a true spiritual relationship with God is more important than staking claim to any one religion.

In regards to relationships both romantic and otherwise, I think it is helpful to find individuals that do not feel the need to categorize your faith. Some may not understand your spirituality, but in reality, not everything needs to be understood. I try to distance myself from individuals that claim to have all the answers and cast judgement on those that do not share their exact beliefs. I celebrate the differences amonst everyone and I strive to find others that do the same.

Spiritual Getaway

Hey Lovelies,

One of the most enjoyable things to do with your significant other or friends, in my opinion, is to travel. Experiencing new things and places with your loved ones creates lasting memories and deepens bonds. There are many spiritual locations located all throughout the world for lovers and friends alike. Each week, I will introduce a spiritual destination that would make a perfect romantic getaway or a fun trip with your girl or guy friends.

This week’s featured travel destination is Sedona, Arizona.
Apart from having stunning red rock and jaw dropping scenery, Sedona has many spiritual activities and attractions. It is even considered by some as the “New Age Capital”.

  • Spiritual Healing Vortexes

Sedona features many spiritual healing vortexes. These vortexes are thought to be “special spots on the earth where energy is either entering into the earth or projecting out of the earth’s plane.” They are considered to be very sacred sites that allow large leaps in one’s spiritual development. There are three main types of vortexes: energetic, electrical, and balanced. Magnetic vortexes assist inward activity, electric vortexes assist forward movement, and balanced vortexes assist in both. Some of the most popular vortexes are Airport Mesa, Bell Rock, Cathedral Rock and Boynton Canyon.

  • Psychics, Reiki healers, and Shamans

Sedona is home to many psychics, reiki healers, and shamans. There are also numerous crystal shops and aura-reading stations in many of the strip malls.

  • Outdoor Adventure

Sedona offers plenty of hiking, yoga classes, and outdoor adventure. There are many great mediation quarters, not to mention plenty of sunshine to sun gaze.

These are just a few of the many great things Sedona has to offer. If you are looking for a travel destination that also feeds your spiritual growth, then I would consider Sedona, Arizona.

Does Your Family Support Your Spirituality?

Hey Lovelies,

When you are on a spiritual journey, your life begins to change in ways you cannot even fathom. It is very exciting to learn new things about yourself and expand on your path towards enlightenment. Oftentimes it can be tempting to want to talk about your experiences with your loved ones and family members, but unfortunately, some may not understand it, or even want to hear about it at all.

Spirituality is simply not for everyone. Many people, including myself, face apprehension from family members that deem it as wrong or sinful. So what do you do when your family does not support your spirituality? For me personally, I do nothing. This approach may seem extremely passive to some, but I find that not speaking about it to those who do not understand prevents a strain on the relationship.

Most of my extended family members do not understand my spirituality and do not care to either, and for me, that is okay. I realize that we do not all have to believe or practice the same things in order to love one another or to associate with one another. As long as everyone remains respectful, then we have no issue. You cannot force your opinion or beliefs onto others, especially in regards to spirituality. It is important to give others their space and allow them to come to you with questions if interested.

For some, an ultimatum is given to either choose their spirituality or their family. When placed in situations like this, I would say to try and explain how much it means to you. Explain how you do not expect them to understand your decision or to choose the same, however, your spirituality is something that you believe in your heart and are not willing to give up. If they truly love you, they will grow to be at peace with your decision.

When placed in these situations, it is helpful to find friends or organizations of like-minded spiritual people that you CAN share your experiences with without judgment. Places like The Ganden Temple, which is an online community for spiritual and conscious individuals, provide a safe space to learn, share, grow, and evolve together.

Soul Music Review

Hey Lovelies,

I have a confession to make about an obsession of mine. Before you get too excited, it’s something that I think the many of you are also quite fond of, Music! I love music, both listening to it and making it as well. More specifically, I am a huge fan of R&B/Soul Music, both old school and new school. I truly believe soul music provides a spiritual experience for both the listener and vocalist alike. All of that being said, on Wednesdays, I would like to review a featured love song. Some of the songs will be old classics and others will be new favorites.

The song featured today is ‘Endless Love’ a duet by Diana Ross and Lionel Richie. The song was produced by Lionel Richie and released in August of 1981. Here is a link to the song below…

“Endless Love” is a classic! Featuring two soulful voices over a soft piano, classic guitar, and whimsical strings, it is a truly stunning recording. Richie’s musical talent is tremendous and I am continuously inspired by his ability to play numerous instruments and write countless songs with such ease. The legendary Ms. Ross never disappoints with her bright warm tone and lovely lyrical accentuation. “Endless Love” reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 charts and became one of the best selling songs of Ross’s career.

The soulful ballad is about a couple professing their undying love towards one another and proving their eternal devotion. It illustrates two people that truly live for their union and the idea of two becoming one. The expression of having a soulmate is a deep spiritual experience in that your souls are intertwined far beyond the physical form. I believe this song truly conveys the essence of love.

Dating Disasters (The Meditating Man)

Hey Lovelies,

On Tuesdays, I thought it would be fun to share some dating disaster stories. A few of the stories will be my own and others will not. When browsing, I came across a funny story on that I’d like to share with you all.

This story was written by Kay, age 30, from London, England.

‘My date started doing his daily meditation in the middle of the restaurant’

“The last date I went on wasn’t exactly the worst I’ve ever had, but it was definitely one of the funniest. I went out with a guy I met at a singles event. We chatted a bit and he seemed nice, so we set up a date. We ended up at a restaurant, but opted for drinks and dessert rather than a full meal.
On the date it soon became clear that we were very different. He’s really into new-age philosophy and I am much more grounded. But the best part was when, about half an hour into the date, he started to meditate in the middle of the restaurant.
It was part of his daily routine and he didn’t want to skip it even though we were having dinner. He did inform me in advance and I didn’t object. I was too shocked. I tried to be very polite and withdrew to the ladies’ room when it was time for his meditation. I came back to the table in time to save our waiter who brought us dessert and clearly didn’t know what to do with a meditating guest. After dessert, he said he was available for a second date. I was left contemplating how best to tell him I wasn’t keen.
In the end we ended up going Dutch on the bill. I was glad, because that way I knew I didn’t owe him anything. He never called, and I haven’t tried to get in touch either.”

Just visualizing this story made me laugh out loud! I commend the man for his dedication to his practice. I’m sure many individuals would be caught a little off guard if placed in the same position as Kay. I commend her for respecting his choice and being polite about the situation. Oftentimes, spirituality can be a bit “much” for others that do not understand the practice. It is helpful if your partner is able to not only understand your journey, but to help you and encourage you along the way!
