Spiritual Getaway

Hey Lovelies,

One of the most enjoyable things to do with your significant other or friends, in my opinion, is to travel. Experiencing new things and places with your loved ones creates lasting memories and deepens bonds. There are many spiritual locations located all throughout the world for lovers and friends alike. Each week, I will introduce a spiritual destination that would make a perfect romantic getaway or a fun trip with your girl or guy friends.

This week’s featured travel destination is Yangon, Myanmar.

I will be completely honest and admit that I had no idea where Myanmar was before my research. I now know that it is located in Southeast Asia, between India, China, and Thailand. Yangon is Myanmar’s largest city being home to over 7 million people. The main faith of the country is Buddhism with over ninety percent of the inhabitants practicing the religion.

Shwedagon Pagoda, also known as the Great Dagon Pagoda and the Golden Pagoda, is one of the most sacred destinations and Pilgrimage sites in the world. It is believed to contain relics of the four previous Buddhas of the present kalpa including the staff of Kakusandha, the water filter of Konagamana, a piece of the robe of Kassapa, and eight strands of hair from Gautama. Towering 99 meters high, and covered in gold plates, it can be seen all throughout the city, shimmering in the sunlight.

Myanmar food is described as “one of the greatest things about visiting Yangon”. There are numerous food stalls located all throughout the city offering authentic local cuisine. One of the most popular dishes is known as mohinga, consisting of a bowl rice noodles submerged in a fish based soup broth. Another popular dish is laphet thoke, also known as pickled tea leaf salad. Even still, the country is probably still best known for their flavorful curries. Tea is also a major part of their culture as there are many tea stalls located throughout the city. However, hygiene is not always the best when dealing with the street food, so you have to use your own discretion when choosing where to dine.

The Chaukhtatgyi Paya (Chak Htat Gyi Buddha) also known as the Reclining Buddha is a large 65 meter long reclining Buddha statue. It is located inside a giant metal shed and the crown of is drooped in diamonds and other expensive jewels. The feet are etched with inscriptions and symbols of the Buddha.

Yangon, Myanmar is a city that has a lot to offer including parks , museums, markets, and much more. It is a place of great spiritual significance, especially to those of Buddhist faith. If you are looking for a spiritual getaway, check out the city of Yangon.

With Love,
Miss T
