One of the most enjoyable things to do with your significant other or friends, in my opinion, is to travel. Experiencing new things and places with your loved ones creates lasting memories and deepens bonds. There are many spiritual locations located all throughout the world for lovers and friends alike. Each week, I will introduce a spiritual destination that would make a perfect romantic getaway or a fun trip with your girl or guy friends.
This week’s featured travel destination is Chimayo, Mexico.
Chimayo is a small village roughly 40 minutes from Santa Fe. While it is rather petite in size, it houses one of the most sought after spiritual destinations in the entire world. Chimayo is engulfed in culture and can make for a relaxing getaway.
El Santuario de Chimayo
El Sanctuario de Chimayo is a Roman Catholic church in Chimayo, New Mexico. It has a very unique founding and is a pilgrimage site for people all over the world. El Sanctuario de Chimayo receives roughly 300,000 visitors per year and has been dubbed “the most important Catholic pilgrimage center in the United States.” People travel from all over in faith or curiosity, but the majority come in search of a cure for physical or mental pain, illness, or disability. The church is best known for having “holy dirt” with miraculous curative and healing power. ” Legend says that around 1810, a local friar saw a light coming from a hillside by the Santa Cruz river. He did some digging, and found that the source of the light was a crucifix buried in the dirt. He named it Nuestro Señor de Esquipulas, Our Lord of Esquipulas.Three times, the friar tried to take the crucifix to a neighboring town. Each time it disappeared, only to be found again in its original spot on the hillside. It was clear that Nuestro Señor de Esquipulas wanted to stay in Chimayó, and a small chapel was built there.”
Dinning and Lodging
There are few hotels directly within the village, but there is a hotel close by that honors the culture and richness of the village. Hotel de Chimayo de Santa is located in downtown Santa Fe and is a rich part of New Mexico history. Each room is decorated with historical photographs of Chimayo, handmade wooden crosses, woven bed throws, and custom weavings.
Rancho de Chimayo restaurant is described as “a New Mexico treasure.”
It serves authentic New Mexican cuisine from recipes that have been passed down for generations. It is known for it’s carne adovada (pork that has been stewed to tenderness in Chimayo red chile).
Chimayo is famous for the weavings of the Ortega and Trujillo families. Many shops in Chimayo contain these weavings and other crafts from the region. Some of the more popular places to visit are Centinela Traditional Weaving Arts and Ortega’s Weaving.
Chimayo is a place of great culture and spiritual purpose. It seems like a lot to go through for a small batch of dirt, however thousands upon thousands of people have credited this dirt for unfathomable miracles. If you’re looking for a spiritual and cultured experience, make a trip on down to Chimayo, New Mexico.
